First
presented by Michael Codron on 16th August 1972 at the Comedy
Theatre, London.
Now
let’s get this straight. Leonard fancies delectable Joan. But
she is the fiancée of robust Peter. He works for loud-mouthed
Graham. Graham also lusts after Joan. But Graham is married
to domesticated – more tea anyone? – Anna. Got it? No? That’s
okay, because this is a story of crossed-wires. Made hilarious
when Joan, a prim and proper bespectacled young secretary, overnight
becomes a rampant temptress. Clear? Doesn’t matter. Anyone for
cricket? Darts? How about a game of draughts? All these games
affect the sports-mad Peter. But by the time the football season
starts, Peter has lost Joan to his best friend Leonard. While
love-stricken Leonard confides his woes to Bernard. Who’s Bernard?
He’s always in the garden. Well he would be, wouldn’t he? Bernard’s
a garden gnome. Who forever watches over fishes in the pond.
Where the semi-clad Joan and Leonard eventually wind up! In
other words a mish-mash of brilliantly observed ordinary people
being riotously funny in day-to-day life. Just like the rest
of us!
This
is classic Alan Ayckbourn at his hilarious best. A constant
rib-tickler that leaves audiences laughing, not once, but Time
and Time again.
