Separate Tables

by TERENCE RATTIGAN
Directed by ALVIN RAKOFF

Two dining tables at the Beauregard Hotel, Bournemouth, are the focus of Terence Rattigan's delightful play. 'Table By The Window' is reserved for John Malcolm, once a rising star in the world of politics. Waiting for him tonight is the woman who caused his downfall, his glamorous ex-wife. Too passionate, too overwhelmingly in love, the reunion leads to turmoil before resolving into triumph.

At 'Table Number Seven' sits Major Pollock, ex-Guards, ex-public school, ex-moneyed chappie - or so he says. But why is he so desperately trying to hide tonight's local newspaper? And exactly what is his relationship with plain and suppressed Sybil? There's nothing like a juicy scandal to arouse the prejudices of the hotel's many other guests.

The Mill is thrilled that Anthony Valentine has chosen to make one of his all-too-rare stage appearances here, playing both the Politician as well as the bogus Major. He has been a star since the age of 10. Our audiences will know and love him for his hugely successful television roles such as RAFFLES, the gentleman cracksman; and of course CALLAN, COLDITZ, and MINDER.

A few of Terence Rattigan's other smash hits are THE WINSLOW BOY, THE DEEP BLUE SEA, THE BROWNING VERSION, THE PRINCE & THRE SHOWGIRL - with Marilyn Monroe. We also welcome back the award-winning director Alvin Rakoff - who knew and worked with Rattigan - to add his unique stamp to this production.

The combined talents of Rattigan, Valentine, and Rakoff guarantee a wonderful time in the theatre.

Alvin Rakoff
ALVIN RAKOFF (Director) “Frequent references to Sonning were made to me by Terence Rattigan, ‘I had happy years there. It’s a delightful village’ he told me. He would have enjoyed the irony of my directing one of his plays at The Mill” said Alvin Rakoff. “I met him when BBC TV devised a scheme grandly called The Largest Theatre In the World and asked Terry to write a drama that could be replicated in each country across Europe. Sort of a Eurovision song contest with each nation singing the same song! He was a master of theatre and no slouch at film, but the thought of writing for a multi-camera TV studio terrified him. I was appointed producer/director. And together we travelled the continent. The play was called HEART TO HEART and here in the UK starred Sir Ralph Richardson, Kenneth More, Wendy Craig, Jean Marsh. My late wife and I visited his homes in Ischia, Brighton, Eaton Square and the same specially reserved suites in the same special hotels – the Martinez in Cannes being his favourite. In a business of ups and downs, my times with Rattigan were definitely ups. A self-deprecating man he never appreciated his own major contribution to English Theatre”. Alvin’s own achievements include A VOYAGE ROUND MY FATHER (Laurence Olivier) DON QUIXOTE (Rex Harrison) BEST OF FRIENDS (John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller) CITY ON FIRE (Ava Gardner, Henry Fonda) HOFFMAN (Peter Sellers) REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT (Sean Connery, Warren Mitchell) THE LIBERTY TREE (Jeremy Irons) ON FRIDAY AT 11 (Rod Steiger) COURT MARTIAL (Michael Hordern, Judi Dench) ROMEO & JULIET (Alan Rickman, Celia Johnson) PARADISE POSTPONED ( David Threlfall, Peter Egan, Zoe Wanamaker) A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME (Simon Russel Beale, Miranda Richardson) and many, many more. This is his fourth visit to The Mill - STAGE STRUCK, the musical TOO MARVELOUS FOR WORDS which he also wrote, I REMEMBER YOU – and is coincidentally his fourth Rattigan production - HARLEQUINADE (Joyce Redman, Denholm Elliot, Dame Edith Evans) IN PRAISE OF LOVE (Kenneth More, Claire Bloom) being the others.
