A
comedy by ALAN AYCKBOURN
First
produced at the Stephen Joseph Theatre-in-the Round, Scarborough
on 11 January 1978 and subsequently by Michael Codron at the
Globe Theatre, London on 7 March 1979
Successful
businessman Richard and his beautiful wife Anthea are the
perfect couple. They live in a country house, have two wonderful
children, and an entourage of loyal and loving friends. Or
so they thought.
Teetering between the wildly comic and deeply poignant, Joking
Apart explores the unrelenting theme of natural envy as Richard
and Anthea's friends become ever more resentful of the golden
couple. Rivalries on and off the tennis court, petty jealousies,
unrequited love, and the tantalizing question, "What is happiness?"
makes for an evening of hilarity and revelation.
This brilliant comedy is full of all the wonderfully funny
ingredients that will leave you rocking with laughter. Alan
Ayckbourn has done it again!
